Italy is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque, unique, and historically and culturally significant countries in the world.

However, if there is one thing that it is famous for, it would have to be its food and wine.

Pizza and Pasta

Have you ever eaten a pizza so good, that with one bite you start to image that you are in Italy? Well, there is a reason for that. Most people would certainly associate pizza with Italy, as the birthplace of modern pizza was Naples in the 1800’s and Italians have been proudly eating it ever since. Not only is pizza iconic in Italy, but pasta is also a staple in many Italians diets and a delicious meal for any time of the day. It has been estimated that Italians eat on average almost 30 kilograms of pasta each, per year, making it one of the most popular dishes in the world.

Gelato and desserts

Often confused for ice-cream, gelato is an Italian desert that is lower in fat, has a silkier texture, and is more flavoursome than ice cream. There are gelato stands on every corner in Italy, and you must try all the flavours. Traditional flavours of gelato are chocolate, vanilla, hazelnut, and pistachio, however there are always an abundance of flavours to choose from at your local gelateria. Desserts in Italy are huge, and you will not be disappointed by the sweet treats Italians are famous for. When visiting be sure to try a cannoli, bombolone, panna cotta, and biscotti.

Wine and liqueurs

Italy is home to some of the oldest vineyards in the world, and wine is produced in every region of the country. Italy produces 19% of the worlds wine and is known for its impeccable quality and authentic processes. Producing a multitude of both red and white wines, you can expect to be served a glass with every meal and on every occasion. Many other alcoholic drinks are famous in Italy including Campari, Aperol, and Grappa just to name a few.

Fine dining

You can fine dine anywhere in the world; however, Italy is the place to go if you want some of the top produce in the world. Internationally recognised for its truffles, Italy has the perfect conditions to grow them. Truffles are grown in abundance in Umbria, Piedmont, and Tuscany and are freshly produced in the months of September to December. So be sure to indulge your tastebuds with some of the most prestigious truffles in the world when visiting Italy.
